Seems to me that the media has got the whole Bigotgate thing back to front, and whatever you might think of Gordon Brown he’s done nothing wrong and has been treated pretty unfairly.

It was a private conversation and he was being himself. I take it that no reasonable person expects that our politicians should be on message 24/7, that even their private moments should toe the media line? Brown wasn’t trying to impress anyone, pretend to be something he’s not, use buzzwords, score points, produce soundbites or to appear More PC Than Thou.  What we heard was his honest opinion.

So, given that it got out anyway, what was this shocking opinion that people are claiming has lost him the election?

That he dislikes bigotry.

I don’t have a problem with that to be honest and if anything I am reassured that even in private he’s exhibiting genuine principles. After all, think about all the things he could have said.  Stupid cow. Ignorant prole. Racist fuckwit.

I think the only criticism that can be leveled at him is that he didn’t challenge her directly about her apparently xenophobic views.

However, the responsibility for hurting the feelings of a pensioner lies firmly at the feet of the media company who decided to make the comment public. Sky News. No surprises there then - I wouldn’t be surprised if they deliberately “forgot” to remove or switch off the mic in the hope of getting some dirt.
